The Nambale Magnet School adapts the “magnet” concept from American public education to a Kenyan context. Its Kenyan board has embraced the notion of a primary school that attracts students from its region, and mixes children from different social strata, giving each child an equal chance to thrive. The Rev. Evalyn Wakhusama, the Nambale Magnet School founder, who conceived the idea of such a school, said at the groundbreaking ceremony in August, 2007, “The school when opened will have two categories of students: those who will be admitted on a cost-sharing basis, by paying competitive fees for quality education; and those who will be admitted based on need, who be our sponsored learners. Together we hope that the two groups will have a level playing field in pursuit of quality education. This project will affect Nambale and its environs in generations to come.”

The Nambale Magnet School is dedicated to providing academic opportunity as well as nurture and support to girls and boys who have no home or extended family. The long-term vision of the Nambale Magnet School goes beyond housing and educating indigent children in one of the poorest parts of Africa. The long-term vision is one of transformed life and a better future for the entire community.
